Alderney's commemorative program has long served as a vehicle for the Royal Mint's contract striking, and this 2007 issue appeared a decade after Diana's death in the Paris underpass crash of August 1997. The ten-year remove gave the piece a retrospective rather than reactive character — distinct from the flood of immediate memorial issues that swamped the market in late 1997 and early 1998, many of which were struck by private mints with no royal warrant and caused considerable controversy over taste and licensing.
Alderney, a Crown dependency with its own issuing authority, has produced legal tender coinage since 1989.
