| Reverse description | A finely detailed right-facing bust portrait of HRH The Prince of Wales, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The effigy, designed by Robert Elderton, presents the Prince in civilian attire with naturalistic modelling of facial features and hair. The circumferential legend is divided around the portrait, reading ·H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES· above and ·70TH BIRTHDAY· below, separated by raised dot stops, all within a plain raised rim. |

Piedfort coins — struck at double the standard planchet thickness — have been a Royal Mint collector format since the 1980s revival of a medieval French practice. This piece marks Charles's 70th birthday in November 2018, a moment that coincided with renewed public discussion about the length of his wait for accession, then already the longest in British history. He had been Prince of Wales since 1969.
