Alderney has used its Crown Dependency status to issue commemorative coinage under royal license since the 1990s, functioning effectively as a vehicle for the Royal Mint's collector market rather than circulating currency. The 2017 platinum wedding issue marks Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary — a milestone no other British monarch had previously reached. Philip died in April 2021, making this one of the last commemorative series to celebrate the marriage while both were living.
