Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic and the most remote permanently inhabited island on Earth, has issued commemorative coins under Crown authority since the 1970s — largely as numismatic products for the collector market rather than circulating currency. This 2016 piece marks the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Silver Jubilee photograph of Elizabeth II, a portrait that itself became one of the most widely reproduced royal images of the late 20th century.
Gold-plated copper issues of this type are produced in substantial quantities with collector packaging. The coin's value is entirely sentimental and numismatic; no resident of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas ever spent one.
