Additional information

Tristan da Cunha holds the distinction of being the most remote permanently inhabited island on Earth — over 2,400 kilometres from the nearest landmass — and its commemorative coinage program is administered entirely through the British government, as the island's 250-odd residents have no mint and no meaningful local currency economy. This 2016 piece marks the 90th birthday of Elizabeth II, tying the photographic portrait format to a wave of similar issues across British Overseas Territories that year.

Gold-plated copper issues of this type were struck in large numbers for the collector market and saw no circulation on the island itself.
