Issued for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, this coin commemorates the airborne assault on Bénouville Bridge in the early hours of June 6, 1944 — later renamed Pegasus Bridge after the Pegasus emblem of the British 6th Airborne Division. Major John Howard's company of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry landed by glider within meters of the objective, capturing the bridge intact in under fifteen minutes in what is widely regarded as the first Allied ground action of the Normandy campaign.
The applied colored poppy is an enamel addition, a production technique common to Gibraltar commemorative issues of this period.
