Additional information

Jersey occupied a peculiar position during the Second World War — the only British Crown Dependency to fall under German military occupation, from June 1940 until liberation in May 1945. The island's residents lived under Nazi administration for nearly five years, making the Normandy landings of June 1944 not an abstract Allied operation but a direct precursor to their own freedom. Liberation came nearly a year after D-Day, but the landings ended the island's isolation and cut off German supply lines to the garrison.

This 2009 commemorative marks the 65th anniversary of Operation Overlord. The Royal Mint struck the coin on Jersey's behalf using the standard 28.28g sterling silver specification shared across dozens of Crown dependency commemoratives of the period.
