Issued to mark the bicentenary of Trafalgar, this coin arrives freighted with obvious political irony — Gibraltar, a British territory seized in 1704 and never relinquished despite centuries of Spanish pressure, commemorating the battle that decisively ended Napoleon's ambitions for an Atlantic naval supremacy that might have changed that calculus entirely. Had Villeneuve's combined fleet succeeded at Trafalgar, a French-dominated Mediterranean could plausibly have made Britain's hold on the Rock untenable.
Gibraltar has been a prolific issuer of commemorative crown-sized pieces since the 1970s, contracting production through the Pobjoy Mint.
