Additional information

Alderney's commemorative program has long operated as a revenue vehicle for the States of Alderney rather than a functioning currency system — these pieces are legal tender in name only, never intended to circulate. This 2007 issue marks the 450th anniversary of Mary I's death, a queen whose five-year reign from 1553 produced the first undisputed regnant queen of England and a religious reversal so violent it earned her an epithet that stuck for four centuries. She restored papal authority, repealed Protestant legislation, and oversaw the burning of nearly 300 Protestants at the stake.
