The dates '1952' and '2015' flank the crown to left and right respectively, commemorating the span from the Queen's accession to her becoming the longest-reigning British monarch. The coin was issued to mark Elizabeth II surpassing Queen Victoria's reign length on 9 September 2015 — at that point 63 years and 216 days. Victoria herself never acknowledged the milestone while alive; Elizabeth, characteristically, deflected attention from it in a public statement the same day. The Royal Mint released several versions simultaneously, the silver proof among them, timed precisely to the date of the record rather than a calendar year end.
