The Liberation of Guernsey on 9 May 1945 marked the end of the only British territory to suffer German occupation during the Second World War — a five-year period that included deportations of civilians to internment camps on the Continent. Annual commemorations on Liberation Day remain a significant civic event on the island, and Guernsey has returned to the subject repeatedly in its numismatic program over the decades.
The 2010 date places this issue at the 65th anniversary of liberation.
