Brunel died in 1859, just days after learning that his steamship SS Great Eastern had suffered a catastrophic boiler explosion on its maiden voyage. The coin was issued in 2006 to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, part of a wave of British commemorative issues tied to the BBC's 2002 "Great Britons" poll, in which Brunel placed second behind Churchill.
Guernsey's authority to issue its own coinage, separate from the UK Royal Mint, dates to a 1921 Order in Council.
