The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk served as the RAF's primary ab initio trainer from 1950 until its phaseout in the 1990s, replacing the Tiger Moth and producing generations of military pilots including Prince Charles, who completed his basic flying training on the type at RAF Cranwell in 1971. Gibraltar's Royal Mint-produced commemorative series on RAF aircraft history ran across several years in the mid-2000s, covering types from the biplane era through the jet age.
KM#1359 is one of dozens of issues in this extended series, struck to the same 28.28g crown specification used across Commonwealth commemorative programs of the period.
