Guy Gibson led the 617 Squadron "Dambusters" raid on the Ruhr valley dams in May 1943, a mission for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross — one of the most decorated single operations of the Second World War. Gibson was killed in September 1944 when his de Havilland Mosquito crashed in the Netherlands under circumstances that remain disputed; he was 26.
Jersey's commemorative silver program has issued extensively in this format, with KM#167a being the sterling variant alongside a base metal issue.
