| Obverse description | Gothic-style crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, rendered in high relief after the manner of the celebrated Victorian Gothic portrait. The Queen wears a ornate crown and a lace-trimmed bodice, with fine drapery at the shoulder. The surrounding legend, set in Gothic blackletter script, reads BRITANNIAR . REG : F : D, with ELIZABETH DEI GRATIA arcing to the right and FIVE POUNDS and ALDERNEY C.I. 2021 appearing to the left and lower field respectively. The engraver's initials JC appear in the lower left field. The design is inspired by the iconic Gothic Crown portrait originally used on Victorian coinage. |

| Reverse description | The quartered royal arms shield, adapted from William Dyce's celebrated Gothic Crown reverse design of 1847, occupies the centre of the coin. The shield is divided into four quarters: the first and fourth quarters display the three passant guardant lions of England; the second quarter bears the rampant lion of Scotland; the third quarter displays the harp of Ireland; and a central escutcheon bears the arms of Saxony. The shield is surmounted by the royal crown and flanked by ornate Gothic cross-hatched diaper work. The surrounding legend in Gothic blackletter reads TUEATUR UNITA DEUS and HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, with ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII along the lower arc. |
