Additional information

The Gothic Crown portrait used here is a direct adaptation of William Wyon's 1847 pattern crown design — one of the most admired Victorian coin portraits ever produced, never circulated in its original form due to the milled edge controversy that killed the issue before it reached commerce. The Royal Mint revived the aesthetic for Elizabeth II in a 2021 series pairing Victorian engraving conventions with the reigning monarch, a deliberate historicist exercise rather than any regulatory change.

Wyon's original 1847 work was itself produced in multiple proof-only versions, making the non-circulating proof format of this modern interpretation something of an apt continuation.
