Obverse description Conjoined effigies of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, both facing right in right profile, with the Queen's diademed and pearl-earringed bust placed slightly in front of and below the Duke's bare-headed bust. The Queen wears a pearl necklace and is depicted with characteristic curled hair beneath her diadem. The legend ELIZABETH·II·D·G·REG·F·D arcs along the left periphery, while PHILIP·PRINCEPS curves along the right. The portraits, engraved by Philip Nathan, are rendered in a naturalistic style with fine high-relief detail befitting proof production.

Reverse description Two heraldic shields — the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom on the left and the personal arms of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on the right — are displayed saltire-wise (crossed diagonally), surmounted at the apex by a royal crown. At the centre of the cross formed by the shields, a fouled anchor is depicted, alluding to Prince Philip's naval service. The date of the couple's wedding, 20 NOVEMBER, appears across the central field flanked by the anniversary years 1947 and 1997, with the denomination FIVE POUNDS inscribed along the lower periphery. The design was engraved by Leslie Durbin.
