Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on 20 November 1947, this copper-nickel circulation strike was produced alongside a silver proof version — the two tiers reflecting the Royal Mint's increasingly commercial approach to commemorative coinage through the 1990s. The coin entered general circulation but was rarely encountered in change, as most examples were absorbed immediately into collector sets and presentation packaging.
