Reverse description The reverse commemorates the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, featuring a central bust of an early RAF officer in uniform with peaked cap and moustache, flanked by two First World War biplanes displayed in crossed formation across the field. An inscription in the upper portion of the field reads THE FORMATION OF THE RAF 1918. The encircling legend HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE arcs around the left and upper periphery, while the denomination FIVE POUNDS appears along the lower rim, all rendered against a deeply mirrored proof field.

Additional information

The Royal Air Force was formed on 1 April 1918 through the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service — a bureaucratic unification that was deeply resented by both parent services and nearly undone within years by interwar budget cuts. Jersey, as a Crown dependency with its own commemorative coinage program, issued this piece to mark the RAF's 90th anniversary.

KM#186a distinguishes the silver proof from the base metal KM#186 issued the same year.
