Reverse description Central portrait of Flight Lieutenant Eric James Nicolson VC, depicted in uniform and holding the Victoria Cross medal at lower centre, with a composite background scene referencing the aerial combat over Southampton in 1940 in which he earned his decoration — the only Victoria Cross awarded to RAF Fighter Command during the Second World War. A parachute canopy is visible to the right of the portrait. The peripheral legend reads ERIC JAMES NICOLSON SOUTHAMPTON 1940 at top and sides, with FOR VALOUR inscribed within the upper field, and FIVE POUNDS along the lower arc.
