Issued on the sixtieth anniversary of Jersey's liberation from German occupation, this coin addresses a specific and often overlooked postwar event: the return of the island's evacuated children. When German forces occupied the Channel Islands in July 1940, thousands of Jersey residents — predominantly schoolchildren — had already been evacuated to mainland Britain under a scheme hastily organized in the days before the fall. Many did not return until late 1945, reuniting with families who had spent five years under Nazi administration.
The Channel Islands remain the only British territory occupied by Germany during the war.
