Alderney's place in the Second World War was anything but peripheral. The island was occupied by German forces from July 1940 until May 1945 — the only British territory to endure the full duration of Nazi occupation — and its civilian population had been almost entirely evacuated beforehand, leaving it essentially a garrison island with forced labor camps. The sixtieth anniversary issue draws on that specific, uncomfortable history rather than the broader Allied narrative.
