Alderney's relationship with World War II is not decorative — the island was occupied by German forces from July 1940 until May 1945, the only British Crown dependency to be almost entirely evacuated before occupation. Most residents were shipped to mainland Britain in June 1940; those who remained or were later brought to the island as forced laborers suffered considerably. The Nazi Organisation Todt operated four camps on Alderney, including Sylt, the only SS-run concentration camp on British soil.
The 2005 sixtieth-anniversary issue was one of dozens of similar commemoratives licensed across British territories that year, sharing the standard 28.28g copper-nickel specification used across Crown dependency and Commonwealth commemorative issues of the period.
