Issued to mark the bicentenary of Wellington's most formative early campaign — the 1803–1805 Second Anglo-Maratha War in India, where he earned his knighthood and the tactical reputation that would carry him to Assay, Salamanca, and ultimately Waterloo. Guernsey's use of gold crown issues in this period was largely driven by the collector market rather than any particular island connection to the subject.
The .9166 fineness is standard 22-carat crown gold, the same alloy used for British sovereigns since 1817.
