Issued to mark the bicentenary of Wellington's appointment as Commander-in-Chief in India, this Alderney crown draws on the Channel Islands' long tradition of issuing commemorative five-pound pieces through the Royal Mint under Crown Dependency authority. Wellington's Indian campaigns — Assaye in particular, which he later called his finest victory — are frequently overshadowed by Waterloo in popular memory, making the 2002 framing a deliberate corrective.
