Issued to mark sixty years of marriage between Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, this piece commemorates a union that began on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey — the first major royal public celebration after wartime austerity, broadcast on BBC radio to an estimated 200 million listeners worldwide. Philip renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and was naturalised as a British subject just days before the ceremony, taking the surname Mountbatten.
Jersey's commemorative output from this period was prolific, and the copper-nickel version of this issue circulated alongside a silver proof struck to the same dimensions.
