Jersey has issued commemorative five-pound pieces in considerable volume over the past three decades, and the 2019 D-Day series was no exception — timed to the 75th anniversary of the June 1944 landings, with individual pieces assigned to different Allied formations. The island's own wartime history gives these issues a degree of legitimacy that similar output from less-connected mints cannot claim: Jersey was under German occupation from July 1940 until May 1945, making its population direct witnesses to the conflict being commemorated.
