Guernsey's connection to D-Day is not ceremonial. The island had been under German occupation since June 1940 — the only British territory to fall — and remained so until May 1945, nearly a full year after the Normandy landings that this coin commemorates. The Liberation of Guernsey is still marked as a public holiday on 9 May.
The Royal Mint struck this issue under contract, as Guernsey's own facilities have never produced silver proof coinage domestically.
