Guernsey holds a unique position in the D-Day narrative: it was the only British territory occupied by Nazi Germany during the war, remaining so from June 1940 until liberation in May 1945 — nine months after the Normandy landings it could not directly benefit from. The island's commemorative output on this subject carries a weight of local history that issues from non-occupied nations simply cannot claim.
