| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a dramatic, deeply struck high-relief depiction of Cernunnos, the antlered Celtic horned deity, seated cross-legged in a frontal pose at the centre of a Celtic cross form. The god is shown with large stag antlers, ram-horned serpents coiled about his lower body, and holds a torc in his raised right hand while his left hand rests upon a serpent at his feet. The muscular, semi-draped figure is rendered with exceptional sculptural depth against an intricately detailed background of Celtic knotwork that fills the four arms of the cross. The legend CERNUNNOS is inscribed in a cartouche at the upper arm of the cross, with HORNED GOD below it in a subsidiary panel. The antiqued finish enhances the ancient, mythological character of the composition. |
