Alderney's legal tender commemoratives are struck under licence and distributed almost entirely outside the island itself — the population of roughly 2,000 has little use for a £5 silver proof. Cook's 1768 departure aboard HMS Endeavour on his first Pacific voyage was commissioned by the Royal Society primarily to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti, the Admiralty's geographic ambitions being officially secondary and conveniently deniable.
