Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 Jacobite rising came within striking distance of toppling the Hanoverian monarchy — his forces reached Derby before a retreat that ended at Culloden in April 1746. Gibraltar, seized by Britain in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession, remained fiercely loyal to the Crown throughout; the irony of the Rock commemorating the man who nearly ended that Crown's dynasty is not lost on serious collectors.
