Additional information

Alderney's commemorative program has long operated as a revenue exercise for the island's administration, issuing coins with no expectation of circulation. This piece marks the 50th anniversary of the Mini, the Issigonis-designed car that debuted in August 1959 — a direct response to the 1956 Suez Crisis, which triggered fuel rationing across Britain and created sudden demand for an economical small car.

Alec Issigonis completed the design in under two years, an extraordinary timeline for a vehicle that fundamentally reorganized how small cars were engineered.
