Reverse description Two armoured medieval warriors engaged in close combat, rendered in high relief against a scenic background of rolling hills and billowing clouds. The left figure, dressed in a long mail hauberk and conical nasal helmet, wields a broad-bladed battle-axe and carries a kite shield, representing the Anglo-Saxon forces; the right figure, clad in riveted armour with a rounded helmet and circular shield, advances with a sword, representing the Norman cavalry. In the gilded proof variant (KM#315a), the warrior figures are selectively gilt in gold. The arc legend BATTLE OF HASTINGS and the date 1066 appear in the upper field, while the denomination FIVE POUNDS is inscribed along the lower margin.
