Reverse description The reverse depicts a dramatic battle scene commemorating the Norman Conquest at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, rendered with selective gold plating against a deeply mirrored proof field. In the foreground, two mail-clad foot soldiers are shown: one bearing a kite shield adorned with a lion device, the other drawing a longbow at full extension. To the right, a mounted Norman cavalryman on horseback charges with a lance. The inscription BATTLE OF HASTINGS / 1066 appears to the right of the central composition, with the series title GREAT BATTLES arcing along the upper field and the denomination FIVE POUNDS inscribed along the lower border.
