Guernsey's choice to issue a Battle of Britain commemorative carries an irony worth noting: the island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 through May 1945, making it the only British territory to endure the full duration of Nazi occupation. The RAF fought overhead while Guernsey itself was under the boot. A Guernsey-issued tribute to that victory is historically loaded in ways the coin's commissioners almost certainly intended.
The Supermarine Spitfire entered service in 1938, and by the summer of 1940 roughly 370 were operational — outnumbered throughout the campaign by the Hawker Hurricane, which actually downed more German aircraft during the Battle of Britain.
