Reverse description The reverse, designed by David Lawrence as part of the 'Art and War' series commemorating the First World War centenary, presents a richly detailed composition in high relief. The upper field depicts a frieze-like scene of British infantrymen advancing in full kit, rifles shouldered, rendered in a style evoking wartime sculptural memorials. Overlapping this scene in the lower left, a recessed rectangular panel displays a closer view of two soldiers — one wounded with a bandaged head, the other helmeted and prone with rifle raised — evoking the human cost of combat with graphic immediacy. The inscription 1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918 arcs along the lower field, flanking the panel, with the engraver's initials DL incorporated into the design.
