Additional information

Arras is the French town that gave its name to the underground tunnel network — the Carrière Wellington — dug primarily by New Zealand tunnellers before the April 1917 offensive. The attack launched on Easter Monday achieved one of the largest single-day territorial gains on the Western Front, though the broader Arras campaign ground on until May with casualties exceeding 150,000 on the British side alone. This coin was issued as part of the Royal Mint's World War I centenary programme marking that centenary year.

The Spink reference WW20 places it within that commemorative series. Struck in 22-carat gold to proof standard at Llantrisant.
