Reverse description A stylised frontal bust of King Alfred the Great occupies the central field, rendered in an archaic Anglo-Saxon manuscript-illumination style evoking ninth-century Insular art. The figure is flanked by elaborate foliate and interlace ornament in the tradition of Anglo-Saxon decorative motifs, extending symmetrically to either side of the bust. The legend ALFRED THE GREAT arcs around the upper periphery within a beaded inner border, with the regnal year 871 positioned to the right of the bust. The date 2021 appears prominently in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials JB are discretely placed within the lower field.
