The de Havilland DH.9 was a British single-engine bomber introduced in 1917 as an improvement on the DH.4, but its operational debut was a near-disaster — the underpowered BHP engine caused chronic failures, and RAF squadrons flying it over Germany suffered catastrophic loss rates before the type was partially rehabilitated with the American Liberty engine. Gibraltar's coin program has long used commemorative silver issues to license recognizable British military and aviation subjects, producing pieces aimed squarely at thematic collectors rather than circulation. KM#1387 is part of that commercial series.
