Cunningham commanded the Mediterranean Fleet at the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941, where British forces sank three Italian heavy cruisers and two destroyers in a single night engagement — largely because Ultra intelligence had given him advance warning of Italian movements that he could not officially acknowledge. Jersey's commemorative program has leaned heavily on British naval figures, and Cunningham, who served as First Sea Lord from 1943 and was created Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope in 1946, fits squarely into that tradition.
