Additional information

Abel Tasman never actually saw the Australian mainland despite his two Pacific voyages for the VOC in 1642–44 — he circumnavigated the continent without realizing it was there, making landfall instead in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and becoming the first European to reach New Zealand. Gibraltar's long-running commemorative program for the Royal Mint has issued dozens of five-pound crowns on this 28.28g/38.61mm format, typically licensing designs to third-party distributors rather than producing coins with any meaningful connection to the territory.
