Abel Tasman never actually saw the Australian mainland despite his two Pacific voyages for the VOC in 1642–44 — he circumnavigated the continent without realizing it was there, making landfall instead in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and becoming the first European to reach New Zealand.
