Reverse description A three-quarter length figure of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and coat, waves to a jubilant crowd depicted in high relief behind her. Celebrants holding a Union Jack flag and bouquets of flowers fill the background field, evoking a public royal walkabout. The legend 80 GLORIOUS YEARS arcs along the upper rim, the dates 1997-2006 appear in the lower field within the central design, and the denomination FIVE POUNDS is inscribed along the lower rim. The composition is set within a polished inner border flanked by short rule stops at each side.

Additional information

Issued to mark Elizabeth II's 80th birthday, this is one of dozens of commemorative crowns Gibraltar produced for Royal milestones during the 2000s — the territory's issuing authority leaned heavily on British sentiment to drive collector sales, a revenue stream that had little to do with local monetary needs. The KM#1304 attribution places it firmly in a prolific run of such pieces from the Royal Mint's contract work of the period.
