Gibraltar's commemorative output in the mid-2000s was prolific to the point of controversy — the territory issued dozens of crown-sized pieces annually, many struck in multiple metal variants, targeting the collector market rather than any circulation need. This platinum version of the 2006 eightieth birthday issue is among the rarer metal variants from that program, platinum strikes typically produced in very small quantities against much larger silver runs.
The "older portrait" designation refers to the Raphael Maklouf effigy, used on Gibraltar coinage into the 2000s well after most Commonwealth territories had transitioned to the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait adopted following the 1997–1998 Royal Mint changeover.
