V.E. Day itself fell on 8 May 1945, and Guernsey's liberation from German occupation came the same day — making the anniversary genuinely personal for the island in a way it isn't for most issuing authorities. The bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey were the only British territories occupied by Nazi Germany during the war, a fact that lends these commemorative issues a local weight that purely metropolitan British pieces lack.
