The Royal Academy of Arts was founded in 1768 under the patronage of George III, and this coin marks its 250th anniversary. The RA's founding represented an unusual moment of royal pragmatic compromise — George III disliked several of the founding members personally but approved the charter anyway, recognizing the institution's value for elevating British artistic prestige against Continental competition.
Copper-nickel crown-sized pieces of this type see virtually no circulation; they are issued at a premium and move directly into collections. Surviving examples in anything below mint state are almost invariably the result of mishandling rather than commerce.
