Samuel Hood served as Commander-in-Chief of the British fleet at the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781 and later distinguished himself at the Saints in 1782, where his tactical handling of the line drew more praise than the commander-in-chief Rodney's. Alderney, a dependency of the British Crown sitting closer to France than England, has long issued commemorative crowns under its own authority while remaining outside the UK's currency system — the coins are legal tender on the island but effectively function as collectibles from the first day of issue.
