Additional information

Tristan da Cunha holds the distinction of being the most remote permanently inhabited archipelago on earth, with no airstrip and supply ships arriving only a handful of times per year. Its coinage is issued under British authority but functions almost entirely as a collectibles vehicle — these pieces never circulate on the island in any meaningful sense.

The 1982 portrait referenced here, photographed by Yousuf Karsh, was adopted for circulation coinage across several Commonwealth territories during that decade.
