Obverse description Letterpress and intaglio-printed note on pale stock, with 'Darlington Bank' in large Gothic script across the upper register flanked by calligraphic flourishes and the denomination '£5' to the upper right. The central vignette, engraved by Carpenter of London, presents a seated allegorical female figure with an eagle beside a stone plinth inscribed 'ESTABLISHED 1774', set against a background landscape with a church steeple and arched bridge; an elaborate guilloche oval panel occupies the left vertical border. The promise-to-pay text, place of issue, date, and issuing firm's name are rendered in copperplate script across the lower half, with 'Five Pounds' in bold Gothic type at the foot.

Reverse description Plain reverse printed in a single dark ink, with the large block letters 'FIVE' rendered as a guilloche-enriched typographic underprint spanning the full width of the note. Superimposed at centre is an interlocking chain of circular guilloche rosettes enclosing the firm name 'J. BACKHOUSE & Co.' in bold serif capitals. A manuscript endorsement and a red stamp appear at the lower right, with the serial reference repeated in manuscript at the upper left.
