| Obverse description | Letterpress and intaglio-printed note on pale stock, with 'Darlington Bank' in large Gothic script across the upper register flanked by calligraphic flourishes and the denomination '£5' to the upper right. The central vignette, engraved by Carpenter of London, presents a seated allegorical female figure with an eagle beside a stone plinth inscribed 'ESTABLISHED 1774', set against a background landscape with a church steeple and arched bridge; an elaborate guilloche oval panel occupies the left vertical border. The promise-to-pay text, place of issue, date, and issuing firm's name are rendered in copperplate script across the lower half, with 'Five Pounds' in bold Gothic type at the foot. |
